Friendship Store, other Department Stores and Malls: The Friendship Store is at 40 Beijing Dong Road Tel.53080600 and open 9:30am-10pm. It is two blocks north of the Peace Hotel, and is one of the largest in China. It can crate and ship purchases. Prices are higher than other department stores but it has a good variety of lacquer ware, cinnabar, eggs, peasant paintings, cloisonne, teapots, old porcelain shard boxes, pearls, musical instruments, ordinary stone carvings, painted silk screens, calligraphy, cross-stitch, antique embroidery, and dough figures.
Nanjing Dong Road has the best general shopping. It is a pleasant pedestrian mall with an electric train for tired shoppers. Its many department and specialty stores are open here about 9:30am t0 10pm. A favorite is the , moderately-priced New World at 2 Nanjing Xi Road, Tel.6358888. This is beside the circular overpass opposite the proletarian Number One Department Store, Tel. 63588888, 63223344. Nanjing Road is where tourists from all over the world shop. (Some maps have lists of stores and I found the concierge at the Sofitel Hotel helpful in locating a place to get a watch battery. The Shanghainese themselves shop along Huaihai Road, a very long street with denser crowds. Good there with moderate prices is Parkson Department Store at 918 Huaihai Zhong Road, near the Shan Xi Nan Road metro stop,Tel.64 158818.

A favorite is the moderate-to-expensive Meilongzhen Plaza/ West Gate Mall at 1038 Nanjing Xi Road, tel.62721111, 62187878 . It is open 9:30 am- 10pm and has curios, sporting goods, clothes, toy, cosmetics, art gallery, music cd’s, jewerlry, Watson’s drug store, Isetan department store and travel agent. It also has a bakery, a wine shop, and a Haagen-Dazs ice cream parlor.
Gubei is out towards the airport and near the Hong Qiao hotels. You can buy just about everything there including Haagen-Dazs ice cream, suitcases, groceries and Pashmina shawls, the Carrefour Gubei Shopping Center with 80 small shops is at 268 Shuicheng Nan Road , Tel,62098899. It is open 8:30 am to 10 pm daily and takes Visa credit cards. It has an ATM and taxis are plentiful. Pearl stores are also in the neighborhood. There is also shopping and decent restaurant near the Hongqiao Exhibition Centre, Sherton and Renaissance hotels, for KM, away from Gubei.
The oriental shopping center is at 8 Caoxi Road, Tel. 64870000, open 10am-9pm near the Jiangou and Hua Ting Hotels. Three other department stores and tow computer malls are near by.
Musical instruments. A small store is at 114 Nanjing Dong Road. Try the department stores or the Shanghai Piano Co.369 Yunnan Road at Nangjing Road.
